“Light of Day 2011″ – Presseberichte / Videos

Presseberichte zu den Bruce Springsteen Auftritten am Samstag (wir berichteten):

The Star-Ledger schreibt:

At Light of Day 11 in Asbury Park, Springsteen plays benevolent king
Jesse Malin looked like he’d just won the lottery.
His performance at the eleventh Light of Day had already been going well — he’d told the audience to stand up and get boisterous, and the crowd at the sold-out Paramount Theater in Asbury Park was happy to oblige him.
And just before the New York rocker’s set concluded, Asbury Park’s own homegrown superhero emerged from the shadows, strapped on a guitar (slung low for maximum hip-swinging effect) and launched into the high harmonies on Malin’s “Broken Radio.”
Bruce Springsteen was back home. And he was just getting warmed up.

Asbury Park Press schreibt:

Springsteen highlights Asbury Park’s marathon “Light Of Day’ show for Parkinson’s disease
It must be like an unquenchable thirst.
Each time he came on stage to join another performer, Springsteen was unobtrusive, but seemed ever more reluctant to leave, until finally he just stayed, which is what everybody wanted anyway. There he was, in a plaid flannel shirt, eyes crinkled by a constant smile, playing fantastic stuff … “Atlantic City,” “Pink Cadillac,” “Your Own Worst Enemy,” “Adam Raised A Cain,” and on and on. There is nothing like an Asbury Park show.

Rolling Stone Magazine schreibt:

Bruce Springsteen Plays Epic Surprise Set at Charity Concert In Asbury Park
Every indication pointed to “Twist and Shout” ending the evening. It was nearly 1:30 AM – seven hours into the annual Light of Day benefit concert in Asbury Park – and Joe Grushecky and surprise guest Bruce Springsteen had just wrapped up a blistering ninety-minute set. Afterwards they called all of the evening’s performers back to the stage (including Willie Nile, Garland Jeffreys, Joe D’Urso, Jesse Malin, Alejandro Escovedo and the show’s host, Vincent “Big Pussy” Pastore) for an epic, ten minute “Twist and Shout” that incorporated bits of “La Bamba” and some incoherent ramblings that Big Pussy yelled into the mic.

Springsteen rocks Light of Day 11 in Asbury Park
An energized Bruce Springsteen held the stage for more than ninety minutes at the Light of Day benefit at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park last night. The rocker, who is strongly associated with the Jersey shore town, aired songs from across his career, opening with acoustic versions of “Your Own Worst Enemy” from the recent “Magic” and the infrequently played “This Hard Land” before plugging in and tearing through favorites from “Nebraska,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” and “Born to Run.”
Springsteen delighted the crowd with a soulful version of “Pink Cadillac,” and pleased aficionados with a rendition of “One Way Street” from “The Promise,” his 2010 boxed set.
Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers played the role of the E Street Band for the evening, and did it well. Grushecky, a legend in the Iron City (Springsteen joked that Pittsburgh and New Jersey had been separated at birth), developed a sound similar to that of the Boss, and Springsteen joined his friend for renditions of several Houserockers songs, including “I’m Not Sleeping,” which the “Born in the U.S.A.” singer co-wrote.
The Boss was by far the best-known singer to raise his voice for Light of Day last night, but he was by no means the only attraction at the Paramount. Gruschecky, Jesse Malin and the St. Marks Social, Joe D’Urso and Stone Caravan, Alejandro Escovedo, Garland Jeffreys, Willie Nile, and several acoustic acts played sets of their own earlier in the evening. The concert began at 6:30 p.m., and lasted until 1:30 on Sunday morning …  weiterlesen

Jesse Malin “Love it To Life”

Der aus Whitestone im New Yorker Stadtteil Queens stammende Musiker Jesse Malin, hat am 30. April sein fünftes Studioalbum “Love it To Life” veröffentlicht. 2007 wurde er mit dem Longplayer “Glitter in the Gutter” und dem Bruce Springsteen Duett “Broken Radio” weltbekannt.

Interview mit Jesse Malin (spinner.com):

“Read the lyrics to ‘Born in the USA’: It’s not patriotic,” Malin says. “It’s not ‘get a pickup truck and a rifle.’ That whole record — it’s this huge platinum record, and at least four or five of the songs, the characters, at the end of the song, they go to jail or they’re dead.”
“The ‘Nebraska’ lyrics are still there,” Malin adds, referring to the dark, somber acoustic album Springsteen released in 1982, two years before the slick, mega-selling ‘Born in the USA.’ “I always saw that connection before it was fashionable. Now it’s fashionable to like Bruce, which is great. All these young bands are into it, and that’s cool, because he deserves it.”

Willie Nile Setlist:

Jesse Malin Setlist:

Broken Radio

NJ.com schreibt:

Bruce Springsteen guested at the first Light of Day benefit concert, in 2000. He has appeared — always unbilled — at most of the annual LOD shows, which raise money for Parkinson’s disease research, since then. And Saturday night at Asbury Park’s Paramount Theatre, he did so again, joining Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers at midnight, and staying on stage for more than 70 minutes.
He made two brief appearances earlier in the evening, as well, joining Willie Nile for “Heaven Help the Lonely” (introduced by Nile as a “prayer for the people of Haiti) and Jesse Malin for “Broken Radio.” But he really stretched out with his old friend Grushecky, playing fan favorites like “Darkness On the Edge of Town” and “Atlantic City” as well songs co-written with the Pittsburgh-based rocker such as “Code of Silence” and Another Thin Line.”
Springsteen playfully altered the phrasing of “Pink Cadillac,” which featured Danny Clinch (better known as a rock photographer than a musician) on harmonica, and added bracing guitar solos to “Atlantic City” and “Johnny 99.” And for “Murder Incorporated,” show co-host Vincent Pastore (who played gangster “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on “The Sopranos”) not only sang backing vocals, but folded his arms across his chest and struck a menacing pose as Springsteen soloed.
The show ended with Springsteen and Grushecky leading the benefit’s large ensemble through the show’s theme song, garage-rocker “Light of Day,” as well as “Twist and Shout” ... weiterlesen und Bilder anschauen
