Happy Birthday Max Weinberg

“Mighty Max” Weinberg feiert heute seinen 61. Geburtstag !!!

Bruce Springsteen plays fun, loose 2-hour set at Light of Day in Asbury Park on Saturday night
It’s a show fans lucky to be at the sold-out Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park on Saturday night will not soon forget.
Bruce Springsteen played for close to two hours with Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers at part of Light of Day 12 to benefit Parkinson’s Disease. Springsteen also played with two other artists and played a magical acoustic “Incdent on 57th Street” before joining Joe Grushecky and his band.
By the time, the show ended at 2:10 a.m., with the crowd singing along on an acoustic “Thunder Road,” fans walked away knowing they had just witnessed a great night of music. It was a fun, loose and determined Springsteen performing a 16-song set. He looked ready and set to begin his world tour with the E Street Band coming up in two months.
Bruce’s first appearance of the evening was when he joined Garland Jeffreys for “Wild in the Streeet.”
He later joined Willie Nile for a very powerful “One Guitar.”
Springsteen began his own set shortly after midnight on acoustic guitar.

NJ.com berichtet:

Bruce Springsteen’s guitar auctioned off for $160,000 at Stand Up For Heroes benefit
Bruce took the stage at 10:10 p.m. after being introduced by Jon Stewart as “If James Brown and Bob Dylan  had a baby.”
Bruce  began by telling a joke since the show was a New York Comedy Festival event. He messed up the semi-dirty joke and then did what he does best, perform.
Backed by the evening’s house band, The Max Weinberg Big Band, Springsteen opened with the Seeger Sessions arrangement of “Open All Night” with Joe Delia on piano.
This was a rousing version backed by the 12-piece horn section. This song had Springsteen fans up and dancing during the Seeger Sessions Tour in 2006 but the crowd at the Beacon was not the ususal Springsteen show crowd and very few people were up and dancing.
Bruce then told another dirty joke about a golfer which I can’t repeat here. It was pretty funny.
Up next was a great version of “Spirit In the Night” which featured saxophonist Mindi Abair of the latest version of the Max Weinberg 7.
Bruce jumped up on the speakers and then went into the crowd two different times, going back about 10 rows.
Bruce dedicated his third song “to all the men and women in uniform here tonight.”
It was an acoustic “Land of Hope and Dreams” which really resonated with the audience. He did this in Pittsburgh last Thursday also. Just Bruce with an acoustic guitar and harmonia and it was beautifully done.

While trying to get the guitar to the veteran (who was on the other side of the audience)  Bruce took another guitar and did  a short version of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally” which I thought when he started he was going to play “Open All Night” again.
Bruce then gave the guitar won in the auction to the serviceman and said, as he came back on stage “I got my exercise tonight.”
President Bill Clinton was a surprise guest, speaking to the audience earlier in the eveing for about five minutes talking about “the importance of laughter.”

Interview: “Max Weinberg talks drums, The Boss & Conan”

Max Weinberg talks drums, The Boss & Conan
You might not expect the famed rock drummer from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band to quote jazz pioneer Duke Ellington in an interview. But Max Weinberg, who on Saturday opens the Poway Center for the Performing Arts’ new season and spent 16 years as the musical director on TV’s “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” is not a typical famous rock drummer.

Where most of the other E Street members at the time were scuffling, along with The Boss, to earn a living, Weinberg was making a good salary drumming in the Broadway production of the rock musical “Godspell.”
“It was a big show, so I was making pretty decent money,” said the dapper drummer, who by day was then a business major at Seaton Hall University.
That all changed 37 years ago, when New Jersey native Weinberg successfully auditioned for the Springsteen-led E Street Band. The group’s breakthrough album, “Born To Run,” was still a year away. Times were hard.
“I took a huge pay-cut, but that was OK,” Weinberg said.
“When I auditioned for Bruce it was one of the most miraculous moments in my life. I’ve read where people with the Chicago Bulls or the New York Yankees would say how playing with Michael Jordan or Derek Jeter would raise your game, and Bruce is like that. He makes you do things you never thought you could so. So when I played with him that first night, in August of 1974, I found what I was looking for, in so many ways.”
Fondly introduced by Springsteen at concerts as “Mighty Max Weinberg,” the drummer simultaneously anchored and drove the E Street Band until it broke up in 1989. From 1993 until 2009, he did the same as the band leader and musical director for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and, briefly, on the ill-fated “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.” He balanced his TV show duties with touring, after Springsteen reunited the E Street Band in 1999.

There is no doubt Weinberg takes enormous pride in his contributions to the E Street Band. But the only time the otherwise affable drummer sounded evasive in a nearly hour-long phone interview was when asked if the Springsteen-led band would continue, in the wake of the June death of band saxophonist Clarence Clemons.
“One of the great things is that we stayed together, mostly intact, Of course, we’ve lost two crucial members in the last few years, (keyboardist) Danny (Federici) and Clarence,” Weinberg said.

Max Weinberg: “There is a great deal of sadness”

Juni 2011 sagte Max Weinberg folgendes:

Weinberg was not in the mood to discuss the future of Springsteen’s E Street Band after the death of Clemons June 18 following a stroke.
“There is a great deal of sadness,” he said. “The depth of emotion springing from around the world at the news of Clarence’s death is just remarkable. It’s appreciated. It’s certainly well noticed by all of us who were so close to Clarence. It’s a monumental loss, personally, professionally — in every way. It’s stunning. It’s something that is really very difficult to wrap your head around.”
What did the Big Man mean to Mighty Max?
“Everything,” he said, and fell silent.

Weinberg’s performances on the classic rock albums “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and “Bat Out of Hell” by Meatloaf earned him the distinction of having played on the first and second largest selling albums in rock history.
In 2009 Max debuted his ‘Big Band’ in the US, a bold, swinging 15 piece band that continues the traditions established by Max’s musical heroes, including Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Buddy Rich.
We’re delighted that Max is bringing his new ‘Max Weinberg Experience’ to the first BluesFest London. It is sure to be a spectacular night from one of the greatest drummers in the world. – Quelle
