Mary Van Zandt, 86, of Shrewsbury, N.J., formerly of Middletown, N.J., died May 16, 2012, in the Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, N.J. A private memorial service for family and close friends will be held at the Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home, 1735 Route 35 North, Middletown, N.J. 07748, on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mary lived in Middletown for over 50 years before moving to Shrewsbury four years ago. She was the mother of E Street guitarist, radio host, and Sopranos actor, Steven Van Zandt; playwright and actor/producer, Billy Van Zandt and writer, Kathi Van Zandt. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, William Brewster Van Zandt, in 1998. Mary was born in East Boston, Mass., on Feb. 15, 1926, the daughter of the late Samuel and Adelaide Lento. After working as a floral arranger, secretary for the Fulton Fish Market, salesperson for Jordan Marsh, and interior designer, she moved to Middletown with her husband, where she was office manager for doctors Elliott Englander, Neil Rosen, and David Dornfield until her retirement in 1986. A former member of the New Monmouth Baptist Church, Mary was an award-winning quilter, and loved bocce, bingo, painting, baking, beading, crafts, traveling, Bette Davis movies, Frank Sinatra, attending Bruce Springsteen concerts, and bragging about her children and grandchildren. Survivors include her children, Steven, Billy and Kathi; their spouses, Maureen Van Zandt, Adrienne Barbeau, and Anthony Baldo; grandchildren, Eva Baldo, James Baldo, Cody Carpenter, Walker Van Zandt and William Van Zandt; siblings, Ann Sterling of St. Augustine, Fla.; Pat Lento of Shrewsbury, Mass.; Adelaide Loew of Matawan, N.J., and Salvatore Lento of Meriden, Conn.; brother-in-law, Richard Loew, and sister-in-law, Ella Lento, as well as her many cousins, nieces and nephews.
