Heute vor 6 Jahren – am 19. September 2017 – präsentierte Bruce Springsteen erstmals sein Broadway Programm vor zweihundert geladenen Gästen auf dem Campus der „Monmouth University“ in Long Branch, NJ.

Freude und Familienmitglieder hatten die Möglichkeit, das Soloprogramm im 700 Zuschauer fassenden „Pollak Theatre“ zu verfolgen. Der „Boss“ spielte 15 wegweisende Songs aus seiner Karriere und erzählte Geschichten.

Wenige Tage später – am 3. Oktober 2017 – startete das für 39 Aufführungen geplante Stück im „Walter Kerr Theatre“ am New Yorker Broadway. Wegen der immensen Ticket Nachfrage wurde die Show am 30. August 2017, am 27. November 2017 sowie am 21. März 2018 verlängert. „Springsteen on Broadway“ lief bis zum 15. Dezember 2018 im „Walter Kerr Theatre“ insgesamt 236 Mal.

Bruce Springsteen beschrieb seine Broadway Pläne mit folgenden Worten: „Ich wollte eine Show auf die Beine stellen, die so persönlich und intim wie nur möglich ist. Die Show besteht nur aus mir, einer Gitarre, einem Klavier sowie Worten und Musik“.

Springsteen on Broadway is a solo acoustic performance written and performed by Bruce Springsteen under the lights of Broadway. It is an intimate night with Bruce, his guitar, a piano, and his stories. „My vision of these shows is to make them as personal and intimate as possible. I chose Broadway for this project because it has the beautiful old theaters which seemed like the right setting for what I have in mind. In fact, with one or two exceptions, the 960 seats of the Walter Kerr Theatre is probably the smallest venue I’ve played in the last 40 years. My show is just me, the guitar, the piano and the words and music. Some of the show is spoken, some of it is sung, all of it together is in pursuit of my constant goal—to communicate something of value,“ says Springsteen.

Im Juni 2021 entschloss sich Bruce Springsteen, seine Show erneut an den Broadway zu bringen. Laut einer Pressemeldung vom 7. Juni 2021 werden im 1.710 Zuschauer fassenden „St. James Theatre“ zwischen dem 26. Juni 2021 und dem 4. September 2021 insgesamt 30 Vorstellungen gezeigt.

Bruce Springsteen bestritt die knapp zweistündige Show alleine an der Gitarre und am Klavier. Dabei wurde er oft von Ehefrau Patti Scialfa bei „Toughter Than The Rest“ und „Brilliant Disguise“ unterstützt.

* Am 19. Juni 2018 ersetzte Bruce Springsteen den Song „Long Walk Home“ durch „The Ghost of Tom Joad“. Damit kritisierte er die harte Einwanderungspolitik der amerikanischen Regierung.

Bruce Springsteens Akustik Show wurde im Juni 2019 mit einem Tony-Award bedacht. Der Preis wird seit 1947 alljährlich für herausragende Theater- und Musikaufführungen vergeben. Die Auszeichnung zählt zu den wichtigsten amerikanischen Preisen dieser Art und ist mit dem Oscar vergleichbar.

Bruce Springsteen wurde von Billy Joel mit folgenden Worten auf die Bühne gebeten:

I am honored to be back at the Tonys to present a Special Award to a fellow musician, an old friend, whose intimate show is Springsteen on Brodaway. It’s all about the man and his music, not to mention the heartfelt stories behind 40 years of incredible songs. This extraordinary event began as an eight-week limited run but by the time it wraps up in December will have played 246 performances. The Boss is working hard! So for bringing hundreds of thousands of new theatergoers to Broadway, it’s my pleasure to present the Special Tony Award to Bruce Springsteen.

Bruce Springsteen bedankte sich herzlich und gab während seiner Ansprache zu Protokoll, dass es eine grosse Ehre ist, Teil der Broadway-Community zu sein. Darüber hinaus spielte er den Song „My Hometown“.

Being a part of the Broadway community has been a great thrill and an honor for me — it’s been one of the most exciting things that I’ve ever experienced. Auf 2 Disks – bzw. 4 LPs – findet man Songs und Geschichten, die Bruce Springsteen im Rahmen seines 236 Auftritte andauernden Broadway Gastspiels performt hat. Tags darauf war eine Aufzeichnung der „Springsteen on Broadway“ Show auf Netflix zu sehen.
