Nils Lofgren: The Show goes on …

E Street Band’s Big Man still towers in Lofgren’s thoughts – but the show goes on
For 27 years, Lofgren stood alongside the Big Man, two friends sharing the spotlight and a shenanigan or two. The personal and professional aftershocks from Clemons’ sudden passing in June have not subsided. His sax was a pillar of the E Street sound; Clemons also was the band’s spiritual center.

After decades of honing their craft before huge live audiences, E Street musicians can “play songs we’ve never played before, figure out how to cover for each other,” communicate with hand signals.
They can “work on an arrangement 30 seconds onstage while the teleprompter guy frantically searches for a lyric from a sign Bruce has thrown down like a Frisbee at him.”

Clarence Clemons Tribute in Norfolk, VA

Am Freitag und Samstag – 6. und 7. Januar 2012 – fanden zwei Clarence Clemons Tribute Konzerte in Norfolk, VA statt.

The evening opened with the Nick Clemons Band, being seen and heard for the first time by many of his relatives in the theatre. Said Nick, „Dad broke a lot of hearts in this town.“ Nick was followed by Jake Clemons, with Nick in background], who did an acoustic set and spoke tenderly of his late uncle and how there wasn’t one person in the room Clarence didn’t touch. Jake showed off his Clarence-owned boots that had traveled for ten years, all over the world. „Clarence is in the garden now,“ he said as he sang „A Fool in Love“ with assistance on the sax from Michael „Tunes“ Antunes of the Beaver Brown Band.
Denise Christison of the Attucks Theatre did the official welcome and revealed that Clarence had seen James Brown in the theatre as a teenager. She then introduced Gary U.S. Bonds, who was the master of ceremonies for the rest of the night. Gary’s band was a who’s who of Asbury Park musicians, a supergroup consisiting of Vini Lopez on drums, Garry W. Tallent on bass, Bobby Bandiera on lead guitar, with the horn section including members of Nick’s band, Jake, and Antunes.
Gary opened with „New Orleans“ followed by „This Little Girl,“ Southside Johnny popping on stage to sing backing vocals with Bobby. Bonds sang the song Little Steven wrote for him, „Daddy’s Coming Home,“ and shared his feelings about Clarence when the song was first recorded and how haunting his sax solo was. „Quarter to Three“ got the joint jumpin‘ and shook the theatre so hard pieces of the old rafters fell like snow.
Vini Lopez took two solo spots, „Going Down to Georgia“ and „Crown Liquor,“ with assistance from Nick and Jake.
John Cafferty took the stage next, telling of his last time with Clarence at a fundraiser in Rhode Island and of how C treated everyone on the crew like family. But the emotional highlight of his set was during „Tender Years,“ when Antunes took the spotlight and spoke from his heart about how Clarence’s talent has clearly passed on to his family; he then played the most emotional sax solo that drew a spiritual response from members of the Clemons family in the audience, plus cheers and tears and a standing ovation from the crowd.
The evening continued with sets from Southside Johnny (including „The Fever“ and „I Don’t Want to Go Home“) and Bobby Bandiera, closing out with Garry Tallent anchoring a set of E Street specials. Jobonanno took lead vocals here for „Spirit in the Night,“ „Tenth Avenue Freeze-out,“ and a full-band, trainwreck-fun version of „Rosalita“ immediately going into Jake doing the „Jungleland“ solo to cap the night.

In delivering his eulogy following the sudden death of Clemons at age 69, Bruce Springsteen said “Clarence doesn’t leave the E Street Band when he dies.  He leaves when we die.”  Rock and Roll legend Gary US Bonds notes that “in addition to being a big man, Clarence has a big heart.  I’m so glad we’re finally able to pay tribute to him in my hometown of Norfolk.  We talked about Norfolk all of the time!”  Mr. Bonds and Clemons were close friends having known each other growing up in Norfolk.  Gary US Bonds, as the architect of the “Norfolk Sound” was critically influential on Clarence’s music style, enabling him to further Norfolk’s contribution into Rock music throughout world.  Local concert promoter Bill Reid proclaims „not many Southern cities can claim being the birthplace of rock ’n‘ roll. It’s a helluva claim, but it’s true. It’s a sound everybody, including the Beatles, tried to copy.“

The late Clarence Clemons, affectionately known worldwide as The Big Man, captivated audiences the world over for over forty years with his distinguished ability for making his saxophone speak a universal language.  For more than three decades, Mr. Clemons lofted Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band to become, as some have deemed it, the greatest rock and roll band in the world.  His signature sound was unique to rock music and is heard at its best on hits such as “Born to Run.”  Clemons credited the following sax legends as influences: Junior Walker, King Curtis, and Gato Barbieri; however Clarence developed his own inimitable style, which has made him one of the most renowned saxophonists ever.  He has performed live with the E Street Band, the Jerry Garcia Band, the Grateful Dead, and Ringo Starr’s All Star Band.  Recordings include albums with Aretha Franklin, Paul Young, Alvin Lee and Roy Orbison.   From Dave Koz’s “Sax Man” LP to Ricky Skagg’s “Honey” and most recently on Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory,” Clemons aptitude spanned a range of musical genres.  One of his own albums, Hero, includes the hit single “You’re A Friend of Mine”, recorded as a vocal duet with Jackson Browne.  Additional credits include the spiritually inspired CD Peacemaker to Live in Asbury Park Volumes I and II, featuring Bruce Springsteen and Clarence’s band, Temple of Soul.  In 1981, Clarence Clemons, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band collaborated on Gary “US” Bonds comeback hit “This Little Girl” from 1981’s Dedication.

These events are produced in association with Doc Holiday/Scattered Focus LLC.  Doc Holiday was present in 1969 when Bruce Springsteen came into the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ and saw Clarence Clemons playing with Stormin’ Norman Selden’s Joyful Noise and witnessed Bruce asking Clarence to jam with him.  From that point on, the Big Man changed Rock and Roll forever. – Quelle

Januar 1982 – Nebraska Sessions in Colts Neck, NJ

Nebraska is an acoustic triumph, a basic folk album on which Springsteen has stripped his art down to the core. It’s as harrowing as Darkness on the Edge of Town, but more measured. Every small touch speaks volumes: the delicacy of the acoustic guitars, the blurred sting of the electric guitars, the spare, grim images. He’s now telling simple stories in the language of a deferential common man, peppering his sentences with „sir’s.“ „My name is Joe Roberts,“ he sings. „I work for the state.“
