„Wrecking Ball“ ist eine vernichtende Anklage gegen die Gier der Wall Street Broker. Produzent Ron Aniello hat mir die Möglichkeit gegeben, mit verschiedenen Sounds zu experimentieren.
So wird Bruce Springsteen in einem Interview mit dem amerikanischen Rolling Stone Magazin zitiert. Weiter erklärte der Künstler, dass „Rocky Ground“ von Hip Hop Einflüssen geprägt ist. Ausserdem ist „Death to my Hometown“ ein Song, der an irischen Folk erinnert. Darüber hinaus ist Clarence Clemons Saxophonspiel bei „Land of Hope and Dreams“ zu hören.

The result was Wrecking Ball, a scathing indictment of Wall Street greed and corruption and a look into the devastation it has wrought. „This is as direct a record as I ever made,“ Springsteen tells Rolling Stone. „That’s with the possible exception of Nebraska, which this record has a lot in common with.“
The stark subject matter is paired with an experimental sonic palette that Springsteen created with producer Ron Aniello. „The record basically started out as folk music – just me and a guitar singing these songs,“ says Springsteen. „Then Ron brought a large library of sound that allowed me to explore – like maybe a hip-hop drum loop or country-blues stomp loop. The actual drums came later. There was no preconceived set of instruments that needed to be used, I could go anywhere, do anything, use anything. It was very wide open.“
Album opener „We Take Care of Our Own“ poses a question: Do Americans take care of their own? The songs that follow make the answer clear: The narrator of the slow waltz „Jack of All Trades“ struggles to find work, while the anti-hero of the country-folk stomper „Easy Money“ decides to imitate „all them fat cats“ on Wall Street by turning to crime. The similarly uptempo „Shackled and Drawn,“ meanwhile, offers a political analysis worthy of Woody Guthrie: „Gambling man rolls the dice, workingman pays the bill/ It’s still fat and easy up on banker’s hill/ Up on banker’s hill, the party’s going strong/ Down here below we’re shackled and drawn.“

Anlässlich der Albumvorstellung am vergangenen Donnerstag (wir berichteten hier) kündigte Bruce Springsteen an, dass er in diesem Jahr keinen Präsidentschaftskandidaten unterstützen werde.
„Ich ziehe es vor, an der Seitenlinie zu stehen. Künstler sollen Kanarienvögel in der Kohlegrube sein und einen gewissen Abstand zur Macht haben“, sagte Bruce Springsteen in Paris. Ferner gab der 62jährige Künstler zu Protokoll, dass die Jahre unter George W. Bush sehr schlimm waren. Damals (2004 und 2008) war es nötig, die demokratischen Herausforderer John Kerry und Barack Obama zu unterstützen.
Obwohl sich Springsteen aus dem Wahlkampf heraushalten will, lobte er Barack Obama wegen seines Eintretens für den amerikanischen Automobilkonzern „General Motors“. „Barack Obama hielt GM am Leben. Das war unglaublich wichtig für Michigan“ wird Bruce Springsteen in einem ABC Bericht zitiert. Darüber hinaus ist der „Boss“ froh, dass Al Kaida Führer Osama bin Laden getötet wurde und die Politik ein neues Gesundheitssystem auf den Weg gebracht hat.

Bruce Springsteen threw his support behind Barack Obama in the 2008 election, but when it comes to 2012, “The Boss” won’t be hitting the campaign trail for the Boss of the United States.
Springsteen stumped for Obama in 2008 and John Kerry in 2004, but indicated Thursday during a news conference promoting his new album and tour in Paris that he won’t be on the campaign trail this time, adding that he is “not a professional campaigner.”
“I got into that sort of by accident. The Bush years were so horrific that you couldn’t just sit around,” Springsteen said of his time on the campaign trail, according to the AFP. “I never campaigned for politicians previous to John Kerry and at that moment it was such a blatant disaster occurring at the top of government, you felt that if you had any cachet whatsoever, you had to cash it in because you couldn’t sit around and watch it.
“I prefer to stay on the sidelines. I genuinely believe an artist [is] supposed to be the canary in the coal mine, and you’re better off with a certain distance from the seat of power.”

Zorniger und politischer denn je: Bruce Springsteen hat in Paris sein neues Album „Wrecking Ball“ als Star zum Anfassen vorgestellt.

Das Album beginnt mit den schroffen Gitarrenriffs von „We take care of our own“, der ersten Singleauskopplung, die schon als Occupy-Hymne herumgereicht wird. Es folgt das böse Gaunerstück „Easy Money“, mit fidelen Folk-Einlagen und entsprechender Laune: „Ich hab eine Smith & Wesson 38 und ein Höllenfeuer“. Dann eine bittere Anklage über die Spekulanten auf dem „Bankerhügel“.

Und dann gibt es auch noch die zweite, persönlichere Hälfte des Albums. „This depression“ kommt von tief unten, und die Gastgitarre von Tom Morello ist so hirnzersetzend wie die Depression, die Springsteen um Hilfe schreien lässt. Der Rest des Albums ist E-Street-Band pur.
